Former Pupil Association Inaugural Burns Supper
A braw night was had by all at the Boroughmuir Rugby club on Friday night.
People in attendance were treated to readings of Burns by members of our head team as well as some Highland Dancing by pupils.
Well done to all the Bard would be proud!
Scottish Athletics Championship

Swim Team compete at Scottish Schools Championships
Stuart Crawford, Sophie Annan , Jessica Damen, Ellen Smith ,Anna and Jenny Galloway represented the school at the Scottish School Swimming Finals in Glasgow on Saturday . Only to top fastest swimmers in the country are selected to race in this event and all swimmers did extremely well to qualify ..
Everyone swam really well with Jenny coming 14th in her 200 Breastroke ,Sophie coming 11th in 200 free style and 28th in 100 Breastroke , Anna coming 18th in her 100 Backstroke and Ellen ( just back from ski trip so well done!) coming 10th in 100 Backstroke and 8th in 200 Backstroke. Top 10 in both events -excellent swimming Ellen with PB time also .
Big congratulations to Jess And Stuart for getting on the medal podium !!
Stuart coming in a fantastic 3rd place in 200 Backstroke and 8th in 100 backstroke ! And well done to Jessica getting two top 3 wins with Bronze in 100 Butterfly and Bronze in 200 Butterfly !
The team were a credit to the school and well done to everyone who competed!
STEM event for Girls
A group of S2 girls along with some P7 pupils from South Morningside Primary attended this event at the National Museum. The focus was to engage and inspire girls to think about careers in science, engineering and technology. Women from these industries described their experiences.

visit to the Forth Replacement Crossing
The Design and Engineering Department organised a recent visit to the Forth Replacement Crossing Education Centre for all 32 National 5 Engineering Science students. This was designed to help broaden their depth of learning for the context and challenges unit.
The trip started at the Contact and Education Centre which serves as a focal point for community engagement and education during the Queensferry Crossing’s construction. Former Boroughmuir pupil Tommy Reynolds, currently a 4th year mechanical engineering student on placement with JACOBS, gave a presentation to our students, explaining the background of the Forth bridges, the requirement for a new crossing and the unique issues that this development presented to the various engineers on the project.
The group were then fortunate enough to be taken on a guided tour of the works. This started on the South side of the bridge where the students were able to witness the huge development of the new road network that allows access to the bridge. The tour then progressed to the Fife side of the Forth, where the students witnessed the giant steel sections for the carriageway and the facilities where concrete is applied to them at the port of Rosyth. Finally we drove down to the construction site at North Queensferry where the students were able to see cranes in operation on the north pillar.
This was a highly informative and worthwhile tour. It brought the engineering context and challenges part of the National 5 course to life and helped make it more relevant and accessible to the students.
Debating Club News
Well done to S5 pupils Jess McGhee, and Alisa Matyunina who took part in The Donald Dewar Memorial Tournament held at the Royal High School on Tuesday 26th January.
Jess and Alisa had the task of arguing for the motion that “Compensation should be paid for past injustices”. The girls gave an excellent performance, however despite their valiant efforts, will not proceed to the semi-finals. This was the first year that Jess and Alisa had entered a National debating competition and I am sure both would agree that it has been an invaluable experience. Well done again girls.

Are you a former pupil of Boroughmuir and are currently studying a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) based degree/HND/HNC?
If so, Boroughmuir High School needs you!
Boroughmuir Science department are going to be running a science careers event for senior pupils in June this year. This is to motivate and inspire the young people who study one or more of the STEM subjects.
This would only involve a couple of hours one evening. Pupils would be meeting with you, in pairs, and chatting informally about your job. It is not a presentation and you do not need to prepare or bring anything with you.

Ciara needs your votes!
Ciara Porter has won a place in the final of ‘Junk Kouture’ – a national fashion and costume design competition for young people
– with her Costume design (made from recycled curtains) She will be taking part in the finals at Glasgow Royal Concert hall on Friday 5th Feb where one of the judges will be Louis Walsh. We are the only school from Edinburgh represented in the final from 450 entrants!
Part of the final decision is based on a public vote on the Facebook page. You can vote once a day for 5 days so please if you have time follow the link below and vote for Ciara’s dress.
