Senior Debating Club news

Senior debating team.Congratulations to our Senior Debating team who took part in the Debating Matters competition against Madras College and Portabello High School.

The teams were competing in a national competition for the first time at the National Library of Scotland on Monday 27th September 2015.

One half of the team had the task of arguing for the motion that “We should permit the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport”. The other half had an equally difficult task of arguing against the motion that “Western museums should agree to repatriate cultural artefacts”

Each debater had to give a three minute speech and answer challenging questions from a panel of experts including a Professor of Physiology and the Head of Communications for the Church of Scotland. There were also questions from the audience and from the school they were debating against, and they had

to give closing summary statements. Boroughmuir won  their debate against Madras College. However they were narrowly beaten by Portabello High School however the judges did acknowledge that they had the more difficult task of arguing for the motion. Well done for giving a strong performance.

The next debating competition will be the Donald Dewar Memorial Debating tournament held in November. Once again Bouroughmuir will field a strong team. The debating club is open to S4 – S6 pupils who enjoy debating current issues.
