Our Rights & Values

Our school values ensure we uphold and benefit from the rights set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. (UNCRC)

Respect

Article 2 - No Discrimination

We are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all and we work actively towards eliminating all forms of bullying, prejudice and discrimination. We challenge inequality and promote inclusive, nurturing environments. The ‘I just want to say’ QR code is present in all classrooms, pupils can use this to report incidents of bullying and discrimination.

Article 3 - Best interests of the child

Our school places the well‑being of every pupil at the heart of all decisions. We ensure that learning, safety, and growth come first, creating an environment where children can thrive.

Article 12- Respect for Children’s views

Our school values every pupil’s right to be heard and taken seriously. We encourage pupils to share their ideas and opinions through an active pupil voice group and our pupil parliament, ensuring that children play a meaningful role in school decision‑making.

Article 14 - Freedom of Thought and Religion

Our school values every pupil’s right to think freely, follow their own beliefs, and express them respectfully. Pupils are encouraged to explore diverse ideas and cultures, show understanding toward others, and develop their own identity in a safe and supportive community.

Resilience

Article 5 - Family Guidance as children develop

We recognise the vital role families play in guiding children as they grow. Our school works in partnership with parents and carers, supporting pupils to develop independence while respecting the values and guidance they receive at home.

Article 6 - Life, survival and development

Our school is committed to supporting every child’s growth and well‑being. Through PSE (Personal, Social Education), whole‑school assemblies (for example Bonfire night safety), Health and Wellbeing for S3/4, and CPR training, we help pupils develop essential skills, values, and resilience to thrive in life.

Article 19 - Protection from Violence

Every child has the right to be protected from harm. Our school promotes kindness, respect, and safety, ensuring pupils feel secure and supported. We run the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) programme, where S6 mentors are trained to deliver sessions to S1 pupils. In addition, the MVP’s provide a chill‑out room at break and lunch for anyone who needs a safe and supportive space.

Article 39 - Recovery and Reintegration

Our school supports pupils who have faced difficult experiences, helping them recover and reintegrate into school life. We provide care, guidance, and opportunities to rebuild confidence in a safe environment.

Inclusion

Article 23 – Children with Disabilities

We are committed to inclusion and equality. Pupils with disabilities are supported to participate fully in school life, with access to the resources and encouragement they need to succeed. This year we recognised International Day of Persons with Disabilities with assemblies, a school wide competition and a ‘accessorise purple’ day.

Article 15 - Setting up or joining groups

Pupils are free to form and join groups, clubs, and activities. We encourage teamwork, friendship, and shared interests that strengthen our school community. A wide range of extra-curricular opportunities are available including Sports, Eco Committee, Minecraft Club, Pop Choir, Model UN, Philosophy club and many more.

Article 20 – Children Without Families

Our school recognises the importance of care and belonging. We provide support and guidance for pupils without family networks, ensuring they feel valued and included.

Article 27 - Food, clothing, a safe home

Every child has the right to basic needs. Our school promotes healthy eating and works with families to ensure pupils have a safe and stable environment. Through the Pupil Equity Fund, we support access to free school meals, provide help with uniform costs, and run a breakfast club, ensuring all pupils feel included, confident, and ready to learn.
